PSTax

The SVS, explained in English — before the back-payment arrives.

The minimum contribution isn't your bill. It's a placeholder. Your real contribution base is only set once your tax assessment arrives, and that comes later.

We handle the SVS for you — checking your assessment, planning ahead for the possible back-payment, and optimising tax and social insurance together, all in plain English.

Most people have their taxes under control. The expensive part is usually the SVS.

You settle income tax once a year, and you see the result straight away. The SVS works differently — and that's exactly why most back-payments come from that direction.

1

You start on a provisional contribution base

In your first years, the SVS doesn't know your profit yet. So it charges provisionally — usually the minimum contribution. It feels cheap. But it's only a placeholder.

2

Your tax assessment arrives — later

The SVS only gets your actual profit once the tax office has issued your assessment. That can take two or three years. In the meantime, the difference quietly adds up.

3

Reassessment: back-payment and a higher charge at once

Then both hit at once: the back-payment for the past years and a higher ongoing charge. If you haven't set anything aside, you have a liquidity problem.

This isn't an exception. It's the norm, and it's fully plannable when someone does the maths for you.

Most of what you need to know about the SVS never reaches you in English.

Austrian social insurance is hard enough in German. Official letters arrive in Amtsdeutsch, and while English information does exist, it rarely covers the situation you're actually in. You're expected to understand a contribution logic that most native speakers get wrong too.

That isn't a language problem. It's an information problem — and it costs real money, because the mistakes only surface years later, with the back-payment.

Every letter, explained

Forward anything from the SVS or the tax office. We tell you what it says, what it means, and what happens next.

We handle the correspondence for you

Applications, objections, deadlines, phone calls. You don't have to deal with any of it in German.

The system, not just the paperwork

We explain why the SVS works the way it does — so the next assessment doesn't catch you off guard.

You don't need to learn the system. You need someone who already knows it.

Real cases. Real money.

A real case from one of our clients

€18,000

You're paying the SVS minimum contribution of €483 (2026)?

That's only the minimum contribution — not what you actually owe in the end. One new client learned that the hard way: €18,000 in back-payments for the previous years, all at once. We saved her around €7,000 by moving the payment into her high-income year. Since she's been with PSTax, her SVS is planned ahead — surprises like that don't happen anymore.

Real anonymized cases. Your situation might differ.

This is what we do for every client

Planning ahead instead of paying back

We do the maths before the SVS does.

Every fall we look together at your likely revenue for the year and what you'll actually owe the SVS in the end. You then know months in advance what's coming — and if paying some of it voluntarily up front would help, we'll tell you. That way you avoid nasty SVS surprises — and save real money on tax, because SVS contributions are tax-deductible.

From day one with PSTax, this is your new normal.

You know what's really coming.

We calculate your likely reassessment before it arrives — so you set aside the right amount, not the minimum contribution.

Your contribution charge is right.

Set too high? We file the application to reduce it. Too low? We tell you before the difference builds up over three years.

Tax and SVS are calculated together.

Both depend on the same figure. Treating them separately leaves money on the table — in the timing of the payment as well as the profit allowance (Gewinnfreibetrag).

No more Amtsdeutsch.

Forward any letter from the SVS or the tax office — we reply to the authorities and tell you what it says.

Built for English-speaking self-employed in Austria.

Whether you moved here last year or have been running your business here for a decade — if your working language is English, the SVS is harder than it needs to be.

When an annual package makes sense for you — and when we'll advise against it.

Not every self-employment needs an annual package from day one. If your situation is straightforward and our fee doesn't pay off for you yet, we'll tell you that in the call — instead of sending you an offer.

Once you're above the SVS threshold, VAT comes into play, you have clients abroad, or prepayments are due, doing it on the side gets time-consuming and expensive. From then on, support almost always pays off — and that's exactly what we look at together in the call.

Frequently asked questions

Your SVS charge

Why did I get an SVS back-payment when I always paid on time?

Because your charge in the first years is only provisional. The SVS only knows your actual profit once your income tax assessment is issued — and that often comes two to three years later. Then it recalculates retroactively. So you did nothing wrong: until then, you were paying on an estimate, not on your real contribution base.

My contribution notice is too high — can I get it reduced?

Usually yes. If your current profit is well below what the SVS assumed, the provisional contribution base can be reduced on application. That needs a plausible forecast of your annual result — we check that and file the application for you if it makes sense.

I can't pay the back-payment in one go — what now?

The SVS offers instalment plans and deferral. Both have to be applied for and justified; we handle the application and the communication. The better path, though, is not to get there in the first place: if we calculate your reassessment in advance, you know years ahead what's coming.

Am I even liable for SVS?

From what profit onwards do I have to pay SVS?

As a new self-employed person (Neue:r Selbständige:r), the insurance threshold in 2026 is €6,613.20 profit per year. Above that, you're compulsorily insured. Important: it's profit that counts, not revenue — what's left after deducting your business expenses. The threshold changes every year. Anyone with a trade licence (Gewerbe) is compulsorily insured from day one, regardless of this threshold.

I have a job and I'm self-employed on the side — do I still pay SVS?

Yes, as soon as your self-employment profit is above the insurance threshold. Your employment doesn't change that: it runs through the ÖGK, your self-employed activity through the SVS. This is one of the most common cases we see — people with a side business often only notice with the reassessment that they've crossed the threshold.

Working with PSTax

Do I have to deal with the SVS in German?

No. Forward us anything that arrives — letters, emails, portal messages — and we handle it. We write to the SVS, file applications and objections, and call them when something needs clarifying. You get the summary in English. You never have to compose a letter in German or sit through a German phone call.

Can you register me with the SVS and the tax office?

Yes. Registration with the tax office (Verf24) is included in every package, SVS registration from the Standard package. You sign a power of attorney digitally, and we take care of the rest.

Can I switch to you from my current tax advisor?

Yes, any time — even mid-year. We take over the power of attorney and collect the necessary documents. For every new client we also review the previous years, free of charge. Quite often there's money to be found.

What does it cost and how do I pay?

A fixed price per tax year: Starter €800, Standard €1,200, Professional €1,600 (incl. VAT). No hourly billing, email questions are included. After the call you get a written offer with the package that fits you — before you decide.

What happens in the free 30-minute Tax Check?

30 minutes online. You tell us about your setup, we go through your SVS and tax situation and tell you what might be coming. Afterwards you get a written summary and, if it's a fit, a fixed-price offer. If an annual package doesn't pay off for you yet, we'll tell you — instead of selling you one.
